OpenAI will pool ChatGPT and Codex usage into one token budget on Plus, Pro and Business plans starting in December, and it still hasn't said how much each plan will get. So a long Codex session will come out of the same allowance as the chats you use for drafts, research and client emails. Do you pay for one plan and use both? ## What OpenAI told subscribers The change sits on [an updated OpenAI support page](https://the-decoder.com/openais-upcoming-chat-and-work-merger-in-chatgpt-signals-the-end-of-all-you-can-prompt-pricing/), The Decoder reports, as OpenAI folds the agent features of Work into the main ChatGPT interface. OpenAI also emailed subscribers. [BleepingComputer saw the email](https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/artificial-intelligence/openai-says-its-doubling-pro-usage-limits-and-bringing-work-features-to-chat/), which says **ChatGPT and Codex "will draw from the same allowance."** Here's how the shared allowance works, from the three reports: - Usage is counted in tokens, so bigger models and harder tasks use more of it. - Instant chat doesn't count, and BleepingComputer says Unlimited Instant stays part of the subscription. - Settings → Usage shows the combined usage you have left and when it resets. - At the limit, you can wait for the reset, upgrade your plan or buy credits for eligible features. Still, gaps remain. [TokenPost notes](https://www.tokenpost.com/news/technology/45608) that **OpenAI hasn't given a start day or published allowance amounts by plan**, and that an earlier notice at checkout gave neither. OpenAI expects most users won't have to wait for resets more often than they do now, TokenPost adds. ## Chat and Work get combined They merge. **OpenAI will test a combined Chat and Work experience** with a small group of users in the coming weeks, BleepingComputer reports. Codex stays separate. It keeps its own spot in the ChatGPT desktop app, and TokenPost says the coding tool is also available in code editors and in the terminal for engineering work. Meanwhile, Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 got doubled Work and Codex allowances on October 29. The Decoder presumes that doubling was a way to prepare for the merger, which it also reads as a likely response to criticism of how complex ChatGPT has become. ## Why it matters Say you draft newsletters in ChatGPT and use Codex to patch your WordPress theme. **From December, both jobs share one allowance**, and you don't know how big it is yet. So what should you do before December? Sort your work into two piles: - heavy jobs, like long Codex runs and big file analysis - quick lookups you can leave on Instant Running Codex all afternoon? My read: small teams on Plus or Business will feel it first, since one long Codex task in the morning leaves less room for the captions you'd run through chat later. Then **check Settings → Usage after your first busy week**.
