How we check

  1. We find a real page. For each site we pick a live profile, listing or post where a member links to their own website.
  2. A script reads the link. Our checker loads that page and reads the rel attribute of every link to the member's site. Followed, nofollow, ugc or sponsored is what the page says, not what a help page or another list claims.
  3. We show our working. Every listing links to the page we checked and gives the date. If a site builds its links with JavaScript or hides them behind a login, we say so instead of guessing.
  4. We read the rules. Steps, approval and where the link appears come from the platform's own help pages. We leave out any site with no free way to get listed.

Where to start

  1. Day one: the profiles and, if you serve customers in a place, the local listings. They take minutes and tell search engines which site is yours.
  2. Launch week: the launch directories and software directories that fit what you make, all at once, so the visits overlap.
  3. Every month: one useful post on a publishing platform, answers in the communities your readers use, and a few journalist requests you can answer well.
  4. When you have something to give away: a plugin, template or dataset on a marketplace or developer platform. These are the links that keep growing on their own.

Common questions

What does followed mean here?

That the link to the member's site on the page we checked had no nofollow, ugc or sponsored in its rel attribute. Most lists call these dofollow links. There's no dofollow attribute in HTML; a link is followed unless it says otherwise.

Are nofollow links worth getting?

Often, yes. Since 2019 Google has treated nofollow as a hint rather than a rule, so some may still count. More to the point, a nofollow link from a page people read still sends visitors, and AI assistants read those pages when they decide which sites to mention.

Why don't you show Domain Rating or Domain Authority?

Those are scores from Ahrefs and Moz, from their own crawls, and they differ between tools. We show the Tranco rank instead: an open research ranking of the most popular sites, combined from five sources including Chrome usage data and DNS traffic, and published at tranco-list.eu, so anyone can check it.

How often do you re-check?

Platforms change link policies without warning, so the checker runs again on every listing, and each listing shows the date of its last check. If a listing is wrong, tell us and we'll check it again.

Will these links get my site penalised?

Not if you use them like a real member: a complete profile, a useful post, a product that exists. What Google penalises is a link scheme, such as dozens of thin blogs made only to link to you. A list of places is a starting point, not a plan to submit everywhere.
