Google Will Switch Off Search for K-12 Student Accounts
School admins will have to turn Search back on, and students may get coached answers instead of quick ones.

On November 3, Google said it will switch off Search, Gemini, Gemini Notebook and Gemini in Classroom by default for K-12 student accounts, until a school admin turns them on.
Do students find your site through Google? Then this one’s for you.
What Google is changing
Google’s post on responsible AI for learning comes from Chris Phillips, its VP and general manager of education. Four products will be off by default for K-12 student accounts:
- Google Search
- Gemini
- Gemini Notebook
- Gemini in Classroom
Google says schools, teachers, researchers and policymakers asked for this. There’s no date yet.
Instead, Google will share specifics with schools “in the coming months” before anything rolls out, so that schools have time to prepare and your traffic from them won’t move tomorrow.
Then Google clarified the plan on X, as Search Engine Roundtable reported. Schools can turn each one on separately.
Guided Learning comes to Search
But the second change matters more if you write for students.
When Google’s systems see a student asking for certain kinds of homework help, Search will walk them through it step by step instead of handing over the answer.
Google’s examples: a pasted physics problem, and help writing a book report.
Here’s where each piece stands:
- Search: a pilot in select U.S. schools later this month.
- AI Mode and AI Overviews: Google’s X post says both will offer step-by-step guided learning to schools as well, and it hasn’t given a date for either one yet.
- Google Classroom: Guided Learning went live worldwide on November 3, for activities teachers assign.
Why it matters
Most of you won’t notice any of this. But if students are a real share of your audience (homework help, revision notes, tutoring, an edtech blog), two things change for you.
First, reach. With Search off by default, a student signed in to a school account can’t use it until the school allows it, and nobody knows yet how many schools will leave it off.
So that number decides how much of your traffic is at risk.
Second, the answers: will coached answers send students to your page, or keep them in Google? I’d expect the second, and Google hasn’t said a word about links.
So what would I check this week?
- Your analytics for visits in school hours and from school networks, so you have a baseline before the rollout starts and can see what changes.
- Pages that answer homework questions outright. Those already compete with AI Overviews and their inline links.
- Your own email list.
My read: plan for less student traffic, but don’t panic. Still, students on their own phones and personal accounts aren’t covered by this, so I wouldn’t rewrite your whole site.
Anyway, I’d start with the steps in our AI search guide. They still hold.
Common Questions
Will Google Search stop working for all students in K-12 schools?
No. Google says Search, Gemini and Gemini Notebook will be off by default for K-12 student accounts, and school administrators can turn each product back on individually.
When will Google turn off Search for K-12 student accounts?
There’s no date. On November 3, 2026, Google said it would share specifics with schools in the coming months, before the change rolls out.
What is Guided Learning in Google Search?
It’s a Search feature that walks students through certain homework questions step by step instead of giving the answer. Google is piloting it in select U.S. schools from later in November 2026.
