Squarespace Lays Off 19% of Staff: What It Means for Your Site

About 300 jobs go as AI site builders shake up the market. Squarespace says it wants to move faster. Your site isn't switched off, but it's a good week to check your exit.

Squarespace is laying off 19% of its employees, about 300 people, in a restructuring the company confirmed on November 2, as AI site builders shake up the market it sells into.

So if your website, store or domain is on Squarespace, what does that mean for you?

The cuts take out about 300 of Squarespace’s 1,800 staff, according to The Verge, which first reported the layoffs.

What Squarespace said

Spokesperson Jeff Seedman confirmed it to The Verge and to TechCrunch. He said the goal is to “simplify how we operate, sharpen our priorities” and move faster.

Staff who leave get 16 weeks of base pay.

Which teams lost people? Neither report says, so we don’t know if support was hit.

The AI pressure behind it

TechCrunch ties the cuts to vibe-coding builders, where you type a prompt and get a working front end:

  • Wix bought Base44 for $80 million last year.
  • Lovable raised a $400 million Series C in August, at a $13.3 billion valuation.

Squarespace hasn’t sat still, though. It launched its Blueprint AI tool in 2024, which builds sites and writes copy, blog posts and product descriptions.

Then there’s Forma, which the Squarespace guide to vibe coding a website calls an AI-native platform for websites, apps and agents. It’s still “coming soon”, with a waitlist.

The money side:

  • 2021: Squarespace went public at a $10 billion valuation.
  • 2024: it went private again in a $7 billion private equity deal, led by Permira.

Why it matters

So should you move your site off Squarespace this week? I wouldn’t.

Nothing in either report says the product, prices or support terms are changing, so as far as anyone has said, your plan, domain and checkout stay as they were last week.

But fewer staff usually means fewer people behind the tools you pay for, so my read is simple: watch your support response times over the next few months, starting with your next ticket.

Tickets that took a day now take a week? That’s your signal to plan a move.

Still, do one cheap check now:

  • Export your pages, blog posts and product list.
  • Note where your domain is registered and who holds the login.
  • List any custom code in Code Blocks or code injection, since it won’t move by itself.

If you ever do switch, our website migration SEO checklist covers the redirects that keep your traffic.

I think the bigger story is Forma. Squarespace is betting on AI building the site for you. I’d guess these cuts help pay for it.
