Claude Gets Personal Finance, Linking Bank Accounts via Plaid
It sorts your spending, flags duplicate charges and explains APR, but it can't move money and it doesn't sell you a credit card.

Claude can now read your bank and card accounts through Plaid. The new Personal Finance tool is in beta this week for Pro, Max and Ultra users in the US, TechCrunch reports.
It’s read-only, though.
So Claude answers money questions in plain words, using your real balances and transactions in place of the generic advice you’d get from a search or a personal finance blog.
What Claude can do with your accounts
Ask “where did my money go this month?” and Claude totals your spending across connected accounts. It sorts it into groups like rent and utilities, food and drink, and shopping.
Then ask if that’s more than usual.
It also hunts for problems in your transactions. Anthropic says it flags:
- duplicate charges
- unexpected fees
- bills that keep creeping up, month after month
Can you afford that holiday trip? The Verge says Claude will answer that from your own numbers.
It can also list the bills you still have to pay before your next payday and work out how much money you could be saving each month, which is the question most of us avoid asking.
Meanwhile, if a term like APR means nothing to you, Claude explains it and works out how much interest you’ve paid over the past year, with the calculation shown.
What it can see
From each connected bank, Claude gets:
- the bank’s name, and each account’s name and type
- the last four digits of the account number
- balances and credit limits
- up to two years of transactions
Plaid sits in the middle, so Claude never sees your banking passwords. And Anthropic says chats inside the Personal Finance hub aren’t used to train Claude’s models.
Still, up to two years of transactions is a lot.
Catching up with ChatGPT
OpenAI added similar personal finance tools to ChatGPT in May, also through Plaid. Claude is playing catch-up here, as TechCrunch puts it.
So Anthropic leans on what Personal Finance won’t do:
- no ads or sponsored recommendations
- no credit cards, loans or savings accounts of its own
- not designed for investment advice, The Verge reports
That said, Anthropic calls this a first step. It wants banks, wealth managers and financial firms to help shape what comes next.
Why it matters
Run a blog or a small SaaS? Then your hosting, your tools and your groceries probably sit mixed together in one banking app, in one long list. Claude can now read that list.
For most of you, catching a duplicate charge or a software subscription that crept up again at renewal time is the useful part here, far more useful than any budget chart.
Should you connect it today? I’d start with one personal card. Keep your business account out of it during the beta.
Publishers, watch this if you run one of these:
- finance and credit card comparison sites
- money blogs that earn from loan or savings offers
Anthropic has just told your readers that Claude won’t be pushing any cards, loans or savings accounts at them, the very products those sites earn from.
My read: the “which card should I get?” question moves into chat, and the answer won’t carry your affiliate link.
In practice it’s the squeeze search publishers already know from OpenAI’s claim that ChatGPT handles a fifth of Google’s search volume. This time it hits a top-paying niche.
First came Claude Duet, the agent that messages you first. Now your bank. I’ll wait.
Common Questions
Who can use Claude’s Personal Finance tool right now?
Claude Personal Finance is rolling out in beta from the week of November 5, 2026, to Claude Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers in the United States. Neither TechCrunch nor The Verge mentions other countries yet.
Can Claude Personal Finance move money or make payments from my bank account?
No. Anthropic says access through Plaid is read-only, so Claude can’t move, manage or invest money, and it doesn’t see your banking passwords.
Are my Claude Personal Finance chats used to train Anthropic’s models?
Anthropic says conversations inside the Personal Finance hub aren’t used for training. Claude can still read balances, credit limits, account details and up to two years of transactions from each connected account.
