Ahrefs Study: Reddit Mentions Track AI Visibility Most Closely
It's a correlation across 260M prompts, and press coverage and high-traffic pages didn't stand out.

Ahrefs compared seven kinds of brand mention, from Reddit threads to TikTok videos, with how often 10,000 U.S. brands appear in answers on ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews.
Reddit threads tracked AI visibility most closely.
But press coverage scored a little below ordinary web pages. That one may surprise you.
That’s worth knowing if you’re pitching big outlets to get your brand into ChatGPT or AI Overviews, because a spread of smaller sites may do as much for you.
Ahrefs’ study by Louise Linehan went up on Nov. 3. It’s a correlation study, so it can’t show that mentions cause AI visibility.
What Ahrefs measured
The AI side came from public answers in Ahrefs’ Brand Radar to about 260 million prompts on ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. Ahrefs left out every prompt that named the brand.
Then it ranked the brands on each mention type with a Spearman correlation, where 1 means the two lists sit in identical order:
- Reddit threads in Google’s results that name your brand: 0.75
- Domains with a page naming it: 0.70
- Pages naming the brand: 0.70
- Combined monthly organic traffic of those pages: 0.70
- News articles: 0.67
- YouTube videos whose transcript names the brand: 0.64
- TikTok: 0.60
Ahrefs says the gap from top to bottom is small, so you shouldn’t write off any of the seven mention types just because your favourite one came lower on the list.
Three results that change where you’d pitch
Where should your next pitch go? Three results speak to that:
- Press didn’t stand out. News mentions scored 0.67, against 0.70 for mentions on ordinary web pages.
- Traffic didn’t help. Mentions weighted by page traffic scored 0.70, the same as raw counts, so a mention on a quiet niche site seemed to count about as much as one on a big site.
- ChatGPT tracked mentions least. Its scores sat mostly between 0.60 and 0.65, on six of seven factors, so your mentions are a weaker guide there.
Still, the order of the factors was roughly the same on ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews.
So how much do more mentions buy you? A brand on 10,000 pages typically showed up in AI answers 3.7 times as often as one on 1,000, around 273 AI mentions against 73.
That’s 9,000 extra pages for about 200 extra AI mentions. On ChatGPT it was 2.2x.
Reddit had the steepest curve: a brand with 10x more Reddit mentions typically got about 5.5x more AI mentions. The median brand had just 8 Reddit threads naming it, and 29% had none.
Is it just big brands winning?
Ahrefs tested that by comparing brands with similar search demand, so a brand like yours would only be compared with brands people search for about as often.
Within those bands the link held but weakened, to between 0.34 and 0.54 depending on the band, against 0.70 across all 10,000 brands.
So size explains part of it. That said, Ahrefs says the link held in all 50 of its finer groups too.
Here are the other limits I’d keep in mind before you act on any of it:
- It’s correlation. Ahrefs writes: “We can’t say mentions cause AI visibility.”
- Web mentions are matched as exact phrases, so it kept only brand names of five or more characters and dropped common words and personal names.
- Many brands had zero AI mentions on a single platform (46% on ChatGPT), which weakens those per-platform scores.
- It’s all Ahrefs’ own data, from the tools it suggests you use to track your mentions.
Ahrefs’ December 2025 study of 75,000 brands had YouTube mentions on top, at about 0.74. It didn’t measure Reddit mentions at all.
Why it matters
Want your site or SaaS product in answers on ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews? Go wide. Mentions on small sites seemed to count about as much as mentions on big ones.
Meanwhile, Reddit licenses its content to Google and OpenAI, Ahrefs notes, which gives both direct access to its posts and comments for training models and for AI answers.
Only Wikipedia gets cited more in Brand Radar.
Ahrefs’ advice to you: start with Reddit. I’d take three steps this month:
- Count the Reddit threads in Google’s results that name your brand. How many do you have? At 8 or more, you’re ahead of half the brands in this study.
- List the sites that write about your competitors, then pitch the smaller ones too.
- Track your AI mentions over months, not weeks: Ahrefs reckons a visible change probably takes a large, sustained rise in the number of sites talking about you.
Our AI search optimization guide covers how to measure AI citations and referrals on your own site.
My read: don’t go dropping your brand into threads yourself.
I’d earn the mentions by being useful in the threads, newsletters and small blogs where your customers already talk about the problem you solve, and let them name you.
I’d also watch Reddit itself. It is moving to logged-in pages as search traffic falls, and this study only counted Reddit threads in Google’s results.
Common Questions
Which type of brand mention correlates most with AI visibility?
Reddit mentions, in Ahrefs’ study of 10,000 U.S. brands. Reddit threads in Google’s results that named a brand correlated at 0.75 with AI mentions across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews.
Does press coverage help a brand show up in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?
It correlates, but no more than ordinary web pages. News article mentions scored 0.67 in the Ahrefs study, slightly below the 0.70 for webpage mentions in general.
Do more brand mentions mean proportionally more AI mentions?
No. Ahrefs found that a brand with 10 times more webpage mentions typically got about 3.7 times more AI mentions, so returns shrink as coverage grows.
